The Statistical Methods Group's mission is to maximize the statistical and scientific rigor of the Institute’s public policy data collection and analysis. Day to day, that means working with staff from all UI policy centers on research design, data processing and protocols, survey design and analysis, and research innovation and efficiency.
Representative projects in 2007 included replicating data set construction for a federally funded study, assisting in designing a study of children of deported immigrants, and helping design and manage a survey to assess the implementation of a universal health care program.
Team members took part in national seminars on exploring statistical inferences from web-based surveys, remedying declining survey response rates, assessing alternatives to census data, and sizing up misuse of beneficiary funds in the Social Security Administration’s representative payee system.
