Emerging Issues in Philanthropy Seminar Series

Convened twice a year in collaboration with the Hauser Institute for Civil Society at Harvard University, these discussions explore policy issues affecting nonprofits and philanthropy. Summaries of the discussions are released as briefs.

Emerging Scholars Project

CNP provides paid internships to scholars from underserved groups to provide hands on research experiences at the Urban Institute in the field of nonprofits and philanthropy.

Form 990 E-Filing Software

Developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), the 990 online form allows nonprofits to electronically prepare and submit IRS forms 990, 990-EZ, and 8868 (extension requests). E-filing significantly reduces the error rate over handwritten forms, improving the quality of data available for research and analysis.

Fundraising Effectiveness Project

Researchers working on this project, established by CNP and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, analyze fundraising data to assess fundraising effectiveness and develop tools to promote “growth in giving” for nonprofits.

Mapping Social Impact Fourth Sector Organizations

A growing number of nonprofit and for-profit enterprises share the dual goals of generating profits and operating primarily for social benefit. As a first step toward additional research, CNP researchers are engaging with a broad group of practitioners to define this emerging sector, produce a taxonomy, and create a public database of organizations that operate in this space.

National Center for Charitable Statistics

NCCS is a national repository of data on the US nonprofit sector. We make high-quality data, charts, and graphics on nonprofit organizations available for public use. This information allows users to research and explore the relationships among the nonprofit sector, government, commercial sector, and broader civil society.

NCCS Community Platform

The NCCS Community Platform brings nonprofit data to the community level and overlays it with Census and other data. Its mapping tool lets users identify local assets and gaps in resources, providing communities with information to engage in civic problem solving.

Nonprofit-Government Contracts and Grants

Using two national surveys of nonprofits, CNP is exploring the scope of nonprofit-government contracts and grants and the problems that arise. Briefs on issues facing nonprofit grant and contract recipients will be supplemented with additional studies on the government perspective.

PerformWell

PerformWell helps nonprofit practitioners identify performance outcome measures and effective practices in managing service delivery. PerformWell is an outgrowth of the Outcomes Indicators Project, which developed a common outcomes framework to help standardize approaches to performance measurement in the nonprofit sector.

State Regulation of the Charitable Sector Project

In collaboration with the Charities Regulation and Oversight Project at Columbia Law School, CNP researchers are conducting a study of state charity regulation through a national survey and interviews.

Tax Policy and Charities

This collaborative initiative between the Center for Nonprofits and Philanthropy (CNP) and the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center analyzes the interactions between the tax system and the charitable sector, with special emphasis on fiscal debates at the federal and state levels. Researchers study topics such as income and estate tax deductions for charitable giving, income- and property-tax exemptions for nonprofit organizations, and private foundation excise taxes.

Trends in Family Philanthropy Study

A national survey of philanthropic foundations that involve donor families will identify issues and trends of importance to families that employ foundations as part of their giving strategies.
